THE JOY OF DOING GOOD ON THE SABBATH

Key Scripture: Matthew 12:12

Jesus clearly taught that it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. The day is not meant for selfish inactivity. It is sacred time in which love for God can overflow into love for people.

Doing good may include visiting someone who is hospitalized, preparing food for a grieving family, encouraging a discouraged church member, praying with a neighbor, helping an older adult, or participating in compassionate outreach.

Service should be thoughtful and appropriate. The goal is not to fill the Sabbath with exhausting projects or ordinary business. Instead, we seek activities that relieve suffering, restore dignity, communicate truth, and reveal God’s kindness.

Acts of mercy can also protect us from self-centered religion. It is possible to attend worship while ignoring the person who is lonely or in need. Jesus repeatedly redirected attention toward people whom others overlooked.

Service brings joy to both the giver and receiver. A person who begins the Sabbath feeling discouraged may experience renewal by becoming a blessing to someone else.

Churches can create simple Sabbath ministries that involve all ages. Children, youth, adults, and seniors each have gifts to share. Even someone with limited mobility can make a phone call, write a note, or pray faithfully.

Prayer:
Lord, open our eyes to opportunities for doing good. Let our Sabbath service bring comfort, dignity, healing, and hope in the name of Jesus. Amen.
