A COVENANT BEFORE GOD

Key Scripture: Malachi 2:14

Christian marriage is a covenant, not merely a contract. A contract may focus on what each person receives, but a covenant emphasizes faithful commitment. Seventh-day Adventist belief teaches that the marriage promise is made both to one’s spouse and to God.

This covenant calls husband and wife to remain loyal through changing seasons. Feelings may rise and fall, finances may become difficult, health may change, and misunderstandings may occur. Commitment gives love a firm foundation during those moments.

A covenant does not excuse cruelty or abuse. God condemns violence and calls every person to treat others with dignity. When serious harm occurs, safety and wise pastoral or professional support are necessary.

In healthy marriage, covenant love is expressed through daily choices: speaking kindly, keeping promises, apologizing sincerely, protecting trust, and seeking God together. Faithfulness in small matters strengthens the lifelong promise.

Prayer:
Faithful God, teach married couples to honor their covenant. Give them courage, tenderness, integrity, and enduring love. Amen.
