Key Scripture: Romans 12:10
Seventh-day Adventist teaching describes mutual love, honor, respect, and responsibility as essential qualities of marriage. These qualities turn a household into a place of safety and belonging.
Respect means recognizing the God-given worth of one’s spouse. It rejects insults, humiliation, manipulation, and contempt. Honor is expressed by listening carefully, valuing a spouse’s contributions, protecting private information, and speaking well of one another.
Love is more than emotion. It is patient action for another person’s good. A loving husband or wife learns what encourages the other, shares responsibilities fairly, and remains attentive during difficult seasons.
Mutual respect does not require agreement on every subject. Couples can discuss differences without attacking each other. A gentle tone, an honest explanation, and a willingness to compromise can preserve unity.
Marriage becomes stronger when both people regularly ask, “How can I communicate God’s love to my spouse today?”
Prayer:
God of love, remove pride and harshness from our homes. Help husbands and wives treat each other with honor, tenderness, and respect. Amen.
