SUPPORTING A SPOUSE IN DIFFICULT TIMES

Key Scripture: Galatians 6:2

Marriage provides companionship during both joy and suffering. When one spouse faces grief, illness, unemployment, disappointment, or emotional distress, the other has an opportunity to demonstrate covenant love.

Support begins with listening. Quick advice may be less helpful than a calm presence and sincere words such as, “I am here with you.” Practical help can reduce the burden: attending an appointment, managing a task, or protecting time for rest.

A supportive spouse does not have to solve every problem. Some needs require medical, pastoral, financial, or mental-health professionals. Encouraging appropriate help is an act of love.

Caregivers must also attend to their own health and spiritual life. Exhaustion can make compassionate service difficult.

Prayer reminds couples that neither person carries the burden alone. God remains present and can use hardship to deepen patience, trust, and unity.

Prayer:
Compassionate Father, strengthen spouses who are suffering and those who care for them. Surround every family with wise and loving support. Amen.
