THE SABBATH AND GOD’S WORK OF SALVATION

Key Scripture: Deuteronomy 5:12″15

In Deuteronomy, the Sabbath commandment is connected with Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt. God told His people to rest because He had brought them out of bondage with a mighty hand.

This gives the Sabbath both a creation meaning and a redemption meaning. It honors the God who made us and the God who sets captives free.

Sin is a cruel master. It produces guilt, brokenness, fear, and separation from God. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, salvation is offered freely to everyone who believes. We cannot rescue ourselves by working harder. We must rest in what Christ has accomplished.

The Sabbath illustrates this gospel truth. Each week, we stop ordinary labor and depend on God. This physical rest can teach the heart to trust in divine grace.

Sabbath observance does not save us. Only Jesus saves. Yet the day provides a weekly opportunity to celebrate His deliverance, remember His sacrifice, and renew our trust in Him.

Those who have received freedom should also care about the freedom of others. The Sabbath calls us to oppose oppression, practice justice, and show mercy.

Prayer:
Redeeming God, thank You for delivering us through Jesus Christ. Help us rest in His completed work and share Your freedom, justice, and mercy with others. Amen.
