Key Scripture: Exodus 20:12
The fifth commandment protects the family and calls children to honor their parents. Honor includes respect, gratitude, appropriate obedience, and care.
As children mature, the form of obedience changes, but respect remains. Honoring parents does not require participating in sin or tolerating abuse. Healthy boundaries may be necessary. Parents also carry responsibility to act in ways worthy of trust and to avoid provoking their children.
Prayer:
Father, strengthen families and teach children and parents to treat one another with honor. Amen.
